Crown-tipped Coral

Crown-tipped Coral

While hunting near the Machias River I came across this falls offerings of mushrooms. This is a Crown-tipped Coral, is edible and usually has a peppery taste. I didn't try it, but will put it on my list.

Yellow Patches

Yellow Patches

Very colorful, the Yellow Patches is one of the most common eastern amanitas. It's edibility has not been established.

Bear Season 8-2011!

Bear hunting

The second day of bear hunting, still no luck. Stephen and I are hunting with Ed Crosby of Katahdin Mountain Lodge and Guide Service. The hurricane messed up the bears routine. He had them coming to the baits before the storm, but they're slow coming back to them. The construction at the Jefferson School delayed the openning, we may need the extra time.

Beach Time At Camp! 7-11-11

Matthew and Nathan

Nathan and Matthew are enjoying a little beach time. We came down for some fishing, but experience told me buckets and shovels will hold their attention much longer. I'm looking forward to them coming to camp for a weekend with me. The State Park is just a short walk and they have slides, swings and all that fun stuff.

Cabbage Island Clambake! 7-10-11

Latest Bear Sighting 6-26-11

Went Down East Sunday hoping to see a bear. I saw two. This guy crossed the road about 30 yards ahead of me as I was walking in to the powerline. I followed him for about 45 minutes as he foraged along.

Fishing Lower Togus Pond 5-30-11

More Spring coyote hunting 5-7-11

Went out coyote hunting, and had this black bear visit. I've been filming bears in this area for three years, he may be one of the cubs from three years ago.

Spring coyote hunting 4-13-11

Deer

Went out today from 9 to noon across the street from my house. The wind was right in my face as I had walked in a couple hundred yards and noticed something moving in the woods. There was a group of deer going toward the way I had just come. So I eased off my backpack and got out the video camera. It was fairly thick and I was only seeing glimpses of them. They were pretty much by me by the time I got out the camera. So I got out a doe bleat and tried calling them back. After a minute or so they came running back through the way they came. Guess I spooked them. Didn't have time to check out the video, if I have anything worth posting I will. Pushed in another hundred yards to a spot I wanted to call from, just in the woods off of a swale at the end of a big field. That's were I am in the picture. No luck! The next stand was about a half mile away at the spot I video tapped my missing the coyote in December. Called there for about an hour, no luck there either. Did see coyote scat (not real fresh) on the road and a group of turkeys. I need to rescout that area and find some fresh sign.

More Spring Deer 3-27-11

Deer

These deer are probably the same ones as in the picture from 3-20. This field is a couple hundred yards from the powerline where that shot was taken.

Below is a big group of 20 plus deer, coming out for some spring nibbling in the Monroe, Maine area. Good to see so many together after such a hard winter. Had my point and shoot camera and they were 150 yards or so and with fading light, the quality wasn't that great.

Deer

I was out for a walk today and spotted these six deer feeding on a powerline mid morning. Kinda hard to tell just how nourished they are, but they look healthy, getting something to eat now anyway. I saw one more in another field, but it was distant.

Stud Mill Road 3-19-11

view from stud mill road

From Old Town, Maine you can drive east 50 miles or so, almost to Canada and not cross a tarred road. North of route 9 and south of route 6 there is a large track of undeveloped territory, mostly paper company property. The Stud Mill Rd runs across it in the southern part and with some logging going on and a communication facility of some sort half way out, it's plowed in the winter at least that far. Yesterday I drove out 30 miles along that road, turned around when I came to where the road was still snow and ice ( my truck is 2wd). Hoping to see an early riser black bear or a moose wandering around. Of course I'm always on the lookout for a coyote and that's the only thing I did see. Just after sunset he was in a grassy area beside the road, probably mousing or looking for the turkeys I had seen earlier, but he wasn't long getting into the woods. By the time I got out of the truck and loaded the 22 pistol I had with me, he was gone. I tried calling a little but I'm sure they wouldn't mistake my red truck for something to eat. I enjoy that area and hope to do a little camping there this year. They shut it down for mud season which will be happening soon. There is a wide variety of terrains, lakes, ponds, streams, hills, and lots of woods.

Todd's Moose 11-1-10

Todd's Moose

A successful moose hunt, Todd Perry (cousin), with father David, shot this 441 lb cow moose (his permit was for a cow) the first day of the November hunt. A well placed shot dropped her right on the spot. Luckily the spot was barely out of the road, so there was no problem having her in a good place for easy loading.

Stephen's First Deer 10-30-10

We called in this nice 115 lb 5 pointer openning day. The rack is deformed on the left side. It has one tine growing across the skull with two short points going up.
The most rewarding hunt I've ever been on. We worked our way guietly down wind of a bedding area stopping to call as we went. We had got in about 100 yards and were sitting on a blowdown. I was using a True Talker I think Hunter Specialties makes them, doing a doe bleat. About 40 yards right in front of us I see this guy. Stephen hadn't picked him out yet. He was broadside behind some trees and looking right at us, my heart was racing. I gave another bleat and he stepped out from the trees, still broadside. At this point Stephen saw him and had a clear shot. He took his time, made a well placed shot with his 243 Rossi. I see the deer react to the bullet and was confident it would be fatel. We gave him about 10 minutes then checked for blood. I couldn't find any blood or hair but was sure it was a good shot. Checking in the direction he went we found him not 40 yards away. Certainly a special experience.

Moose Scouting 10-21-10

David (uncle) and I went "up north" scouting for moose today in preparation for his upcoming moose hunt. We drove all over nortern Maine and the only moose we saw was a road kill. It wasn't till we were driving home that we came across a couple of bulls.

Bear hunting update: NO LUCK!

My Bear 9-2009

Dusty's Bear 2009

My second Maine Black Bear, this one taken in WMD 19. While scouting for Stephen's moose hunt, I was seeing lots of bear sign. So I started hanging around in the evenings (preseason) to see what I could see. Two Videos of the bears on Aug 22,09. This bear was the 10th bear I had seen, most were preseason.

Stephen's Moose 2009

Stephen's Moose 2009

One happy hunter, not bad for his first kill at age eleven. 740lb Bull with a 43in spread taken in WMD 19. Trophy of a lifetime. I did a lot of preseason scouting but didn't find a really good area for calling. So we ended up driving lots of miles searching and it finally paid off on thursday of that week.
